AS2: Task 3: Pre-Production Planning

Pre-Production Planning

Proposal
Prepared by: Jasmine King

  • I have been asked to create a children's television ident for either "CBBC" or "CBeebies" and for this I have chosen CBeebies.
  • I have chosen CBeebies as the channel to create an ident for because my ident will be child friendly and would appeal to the target audience.
  • My theme of idents was "half-term/summer/holidays" and I will involve small characters made out of "Play-Doh".
  • For movement I shall be using stop motion animation as I believe this contributes to the desired effect I need to achieve.
  • The first scene will demonstrate pumpkins bouncing from side to side with a spider hanging in the moonlight.
  • Scene 2 will display how trick-or-treaters will gather.
  • The next scene will portray how more trick-or-treaters gather round each other.
  • The last scene will demonstrate how the trick-or-treaters' bodies will then transform into the word "CBeebies".

AS2: Task 2: Designing the Suite

Designing the Suite

After brainstorming through my ideas, I have decided to produce the suite under "half-term/summer/holidays". I have chosen to to create this suite because I feel that it relates to young children more than the other suite ideas did. Shown below are my ident themes I shall be using for this suite.

Summer Holidays Ident
First Theme - Summer:

My first theme is based around the summer holidays. I have chosen to create a summer themed ident because summer is a very popular season and is the longest holiday that children are given during their time at school. For this theme I have sketched my process onto a storyboard (shown below). As demonstrated in the storyboard the ident's focal point would be the beach. I would include lego characters that would be building sand castles and digging through the sand. The characters digging in the sand would eventually spell the word "CBeebies" and this would be the main focus of the ident. After this, the waves from the ocean would then wash away the letters signalling that this is the end of the ident.

This ident demonstrates a fun and relaxing time for children and can be broadcast during the daytime as the storyboard demonstrates the sun shining at the beach.

I have since chosen not to create this ident as I believe that would be extremely complexed to create for the short length of time I would have for this, however this was my favourite idea.

Halloween Ident
Second Theme - Halloween:

October half term/Halloween is my second theme. For this theme I chose to present a friendly spider dangling from a cloud in the moonlight (due to the dark background, the spider is hard to view on the storyboard). In the second and third boxes of the storyboard, I will display trick-or-treaters gathering in a large number and their bodies will spell CBeebies.

I've had to come up with a few contingencies for this theme because I realised that it would be quite difficult to create the word CBeebies using either lego pieces or play-doh. My new plan for this would be to have the flame from inside of the pumpkins flare upwards and spell CBeebies.

This ident can be broadcast during the evening, this is because winter months mean it would get darker a lot quicker outside and I believe that this would definitely set the Halloween theme.

Out of my three ideas, I have decided that this theme would be the easiest ident to create as it isn't time consuming.

Third Theme - Christmas:

Christmas Ident
My Christmas themed ident would appeal to young children because it is a fun, festive time period that children look forward to. It's a time for presents, food and family. Instead of there being pumpkins on the floor like my Halloween idea - a Christmas tree will be in place instead.

The snowmen will be waving the arms as snow will fall around them and the star on top of the tree will soon transform into the word CBeebies. I believed that this idea would have been the easiest to create, however it would be difficult to portray snow falling in the atmosphere.

As an extended version of the ident, I would portray how the snowmen will place their hats on the ground - symbolising the end of the ident, however I believed that this would again be quite difficult to create in the short amount of time I have.

This ident could be broadcast at any time of the day within the winter months. Children enjoy playing in the snow and building snowmen - thus why I believed that it would be a great idea to include snowmen during the Christmas season.

As my final idea, I have decided to create the Halloween themed ident. This ident is simple, yet fun and entertaining for young children.

Shown below is a short video I have created which presents the idents in a much clearer detail.

AS2: Task 1: Ideas Generation

Ideas Generation

Proposal and theme ideas
How did my idea come about?:

Whilst mind mapping my ideas, my first initial thought was to produce an ident that demonstrated lots of colour. I wanted to demonstrate the theme of colour through brainstorming different ideas on paper as my ident will be created for the children's television channel; CBeebies. Shown below is my mind map. As displayed in the section labeled "themes", I have listed a large variety of what themes appeal to children, some of which include toys, balloons, animals and so on. After mind mapping my ideas, I was able to choose the theme of holidays. My theme bases around holidays for school children, thus why I have chosen to create ident ideas for the summer holidays, October half term holidays and Christmas holidays.

Mind Map

Demonstrated in the mind map are my ideas that I have planned through thought processing. By narrowing down each idea, I have decided to choose the theme in the centre entitled; "Half-term/summer/holidays" as I believe that this would be the most efficient theme to stay consistent with.

Idea Number 1:

My first idea was based around the summer holidays. My initial thoughts were to express what children would find entertaining during the summer, therefore I decided to plan the idea of a beach themed ident. The ident would show Lego characters having fun building sand castles and enjoying the sun. I then thought about changing the camera angle and displaying the mise en scene - this would then identify that the characters have dug the word "CBeebies" into the sand. The duration of the ident would then come to an end as the waves from the ocean would wash away the CBeebies logo. This is a fun idea for an ident and can be broadcast during the daytime.

Idea Number 2:

My second idea was centred around October half-term/Halloween. Most children enjoy Halloween because it's a time where they can dress up, go trick-or-treating and have fun. My idea was to portray pumpkins in the moonlight moving from side to side to the beat of the music - a spider will then come along and do the same thing - except it will be swinging in the background. My initial idea was to have more spiders swinging in the background and spelling CBeebies with their webs, however I believe that this would be quite difficult to produce through stop motion animation. My new idea would involve trick-or-treaters doing this movement instead of the spiders. The CBeebies logo will then appear after this. This ident would be beneficial to broadcast during the evening as it would appeal to the eerie atmosphere Halloween creates.

Idea Number 3:

My final idea would be centred around Christmas. For this idea, I incorporated my idea for the Halloween theme into this theme; however instead of there being pumpkins and spiders, snowmen and Christmas trees will replace them. Children definitely love this fun, festive time of year because it involves them playing in the snow, building snowmen and looking forward to Christmas Day itself. My alternate idea for this theme consists of multiple snowmen gathering round each other and placing their hats on the ground, spelling the word CBeebies in the snow and this would demonstrate the logo. I have decided not to pursue this idea because it would be hard to create using stop motion animation. This ident can be broadcast at any time of the day during this seasonal period because it is child friendly and brightens the mood of its target audience.
